Introductory text for menopause and menstruation

The menopause happens to all women, however the degree of impact on a woman’s quality of life and the symptoms experienced are very individual. It is important that all health care professionals understand the changes that women face at the time of their menopause and the issues related to improving health after menopause.

Menstruation is a natural process that girls and women need to feel empowered to talk openly about, yet this aspect of heath is often still seen as a taboo subject.

Menstrual health is an important part of a woman’s life course but poor diagnosis and suboptimal treatment of common menstrual health problems continue.

Amenorrhoea is the absence of menstruation and a normal physiological event before puberty, during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding, and also after the menopause.
