The First Steps course will support you either individually – or as part of your workplace induction programme – to learn in your own time, and get you started in your health care career. First Steps maps to a range of National Occupational Standards that will support you and expand on your portfolio of learning.

Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at health care assistants and students training to be a health care assistant (HCA).

What will I learn?

First Steps will cover topics vital to the HCA role, such as:

  • the safeguarding of vulnerable people
  • recording and accessing nursing and medical records
  • the principles surrounding accountability and delegation
  • the legal requirements of confidentiality, consent and capacity
  • infection prevention and control.

First Steps will also cover the following:

  • promoting person-centered care
  • promoting health and communication
  • quality, equality, diversity and rights
  • health, safety, security and people development
  • clinical skills.
If you are an RCN member you will be able to download a certificate to demonstrate that you have successfully passed the activities.
